Morning

Explore the Northern Rhône in the Morning: Vienne, Côte-Rôtie & Two Wine Tastings

At 9:00 am, your small-group wine tour departs from Place Bellecour in Lyon aboard a comfortable 8-seater minibus, heading toward the Northern Côtes du Rhône wine region.

Begin this full-day Rhône Valley wine tour in the historic town of Vienne, where you will enjoy a panoramic view over the Rhône Valley from Mount Notre-Dame de Pipet. With your expert guide, gain an introduction to the Northern Rhône grape varieties, its renowned wine appellations, and the region’s strong connection to terroir.

Admire the ancient Roman theatre of Vienne while your guide briefly shares the city’s long-standing wine heritage, dating back more than 2,000 years to Roman times.

Continue through the village of Ampuis, considered the world capital of Syrah, and explore the legendary Côte-Rôtie vineyards, meaning “roasted hillside.” Drive along the impressive terraced slopes of Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, where vineyards rise at dramatic angles above the Rhône River.

Between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm, visit two carefully selected wineries and dive deeper into the art of Northern Rhône winemaking. Enjoy guided cellar tours, walk through the barrel rooms, and learn about traditional and modern aging techniques. 

Each visit concludes with a guided wine tasting, allowing you to compare several white and red wines, including Condrieu, white and red Saint-Joseph, and Côte-Rôtie, while gaining insight into appellation styles, vintages, and food-pairing potential.

Afternoon in the Northern Rhône: Final Wine Tasting at a Small Family Winery

In the afternoon, pass through Condrieu, the historic birthplace of the Viognier grape, which produces the world-famous white wine. Learn the fascinating story of this unique varietal, including how it nearly disappeared in recent decades.

Next, step inside a small family winery founded 35 years ago and discover the hands-on work involved throughout the year to achieve the highest quality grapes. Your guide will explain the meticulous vineyard care, from pruning to harvest, that makes these wines exceptional.

Then, move to the charming tasting room and enjoy a guided tasting of five outstanding Côtes du Rhône wines, including the prestigious Côte-Rôtie. Experience once again the intense aromas of Viognier and the near-perfect elegance of Syrah, both grown in their original Northern Rhône terroir.

We had a wonderful day with Olivier learning all about Northern Cote du Rhône wines and the different AOC. We tasted some amazing reds and whites and visited some unique vineyards. The Cote Rotie area was exceptionally beautiful. Olivier was a great guide explaining the region and the various varietals in an easy to learn way. The day was well organized with a delicious stop for lunch midday. I have been on a few wine tours in different regions and would highly recommend this tour, it was the perfect balance of education and enjoyment! Dont hesitate to book this if you are considering it! It’s well worth the money! Thank you Olivier for a fantastic day!

Olivier does a wonderful bilingual tour of the Côtes du Rhône. He picked us up in his comfortable Mercedes Vito van and took us and a French family for a spectacular overview of the valley from the ancient Roman town of Vienne. Over the day, we visited three small family owned wineries and had lunch at Les Epicurieux in Ampuis. It was a perfect day. Highly recommended.

You should definitely go with Olivier to Cote - Rotie if you love wine! We've had great experience and he knows the local wineries. The wineries are small compared to what I'm used to visiting so he often has to lead the tasting himself but he is an incredible representative for these wineries and took us all over the area. He organized a great lunch in a wine store as well where you can drink, taste, and buy. We had a great time, book any of your Lyon tours with Olivier (Kanpai Tourisme) .

We spent the day on an eight person tour of the Northern Cotes Du Rhone, and visited three wineries with Kanpai Tours led by Olivier. It was a wonderful experience full of in-depth information on the area, the vineyards and the wines produced in the area. Olivier is very knowledgeable yet conveys the information in a casual and understandable manner. The highlights for me were the intimate walk through a vineyard and discussion with it's owner as well as the good wine we were tasting throughout the day. It's a great way to spend a day, I highly recommend this tour.

Ma femme et moi avons passé un très bon moment (2 jours différents, un tour du Beaujolais et le lendemain du Rhône). We highly recommend this excellent tour of the Northern Rhône.
