2 - The original Syrah
&Viognier
Come to explore the northern Rhône valley wine country and discover the homeland of the legendary Syrah & Viognier grapes. Enter a glorious past which goes back to Roman times and taste Hermitage, Cote Rotie & Condrieu wines, some of the most prestigious & renowned appellations in the world.
Highlights:
In the morning , en route stop at Notre-Dame de Pipet Church in Vienne to enjoy a spectacular view on the 2000 year's old roman theatre and a stunning panorama on the Rhone Valley.
Then, discover the vineyards terraces of Hermitage wine country from its emblematic St Christopher Chapel (XIII century) before being welcome at La Maison Chapoutier for a wine tasting.
Capture the essence of the Hermitage “terroir” when you sample several great Syrah and Marsanne wines.
At lunch, savour the local Cotes du Rhone “cuisine” in a nice restaurant of Tain L'Hermitage village. Menus start from 19 €, not included.
In the afternoon , visit Cote Rotie vineyard, certainly one of the oldest in existence in France. In Ampuis, try to appreciate the precipitous vertigo inducing terraced slopes of Cote Brune and Cote Blonde with 30 to 60 degree angles.
Then, stop at a small family winery to learn about the Rhone wine-making savoir-faire & some of their secrets.
Finally, taste the intense aromatic Condrieu Viognier wine and the quasi absolute perfection of Syrah in Côte Rotie wines also called the Queen of the Cotes du Rhone appellations.
